Sleep Apnea & Snoring Treatment Lancaster PA

People with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have disrupted sleep and low blood oxygen levels. When obstructive sleep apnea occurs, the tongue is sucked against the back of the throat. This blocks the upper airway and airflow stops. When the oxygen level in the brain becomes low enough, the sleeper partially awakens, the obstruction in the throat clears, and the flow of air starts again, usually with a loud gasp.

Repeated cycles of decreased oxygenation lead to very serious cardiovascular problems. Additionally, these individuals suffer from excessive daytime sleepiness, depression, and loss of concentration.

Some patients have obstructions that are less severe called Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS). In either case, the individuals suffer many of the same symptoms.

The first step in treatment resides in recognition of the symptoms and seeking appropriate consultation. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons offer consultation and treatment options.

In addition to a detailed history, the doctors will assess the anatomic relationships in the maxillofacial region. With cephalometic (skull x-ray) analysis, the doctors can ascertain the level of obstruction. Sometimes a naso-pharyngeal exam is done with a flexible fiber-optic camera. To confirm the amount of cardiovascular compromise and decreased oxygenation levels, a sleep study may be recommended to monitor an individual overnight.

There are several treatment options available. An initial treatment may consist of using a nasal CPAP machine that delivers pressurized oxygen through a nasal mask to limit obstruction at night. One of the surgical options is an uvulo-palato-pharyngo-plasty (UPPP), which is performed in the back of the soft palate and throat. A similar procedure is sometimes done with the assistance of a laser and is called a laser assisted uvulo-palato-plasty (LAUPP). In other cases, a radio-frequency probe is utilized to tighten the soft palate. These procedures usually performed under light IV sedation in the office.

In more complex cases, the bones of the upper and lower jaw may be repositioned to increase the size of the airway (orthognathic surgery). This procedure is done in the hospital under general anesthesia and requires a one to two day overnight stay in the hospital.

Dr. Weierbach or Dr. Genetti has been fabricating sleep apnea and snoring oral appliances for over eighteen years. Oral appliances are an excellent treatment for patients who snore or who have mild to moderate sleep apnea. They are a comfortable and effective treatment for those patients who have difficulty with feeling claustrophobic or other side effects of a CPAP machine. Dr. Genetti & Dr. Weierbach fabricate several different types of oral appliances dependent upon the patient’s symptoms and occlusion of their teeth. The Micro2 oral appliance is among those types that he utilizes.

Dr. Weierbach was able to correct the poorly done dental work done by another dentist. The completion of the work is nothing less than excellent and beyond my expectations. I never would've believed that the issues that I had could have beeen corrected. The doctor was able to restore the way I looked and gave me a smile that I thought I had lost. I strongly recommend Dr. Weierbach to anyone who has lost faith in their hope to restore or repair a dental problem.

Dentistry taken to a new level! Dr Weierbach recently completed two crowns on my top front teeth. It doesn't get more visible than that! He recommended I replace a very old crown on one front tooth with two crowns of both front teeth to get a perfect match. Even better he suggested they whiten my teeth first so the end result will match the rest of my teeth more closely for a longer period of time. The end result was literally perfection! The size of the teeth was perfect, and the color match was exact. His staff is second to none and their attributes mirror the doctor's own - friendly, competent, attentive and caring.

My daughter 18, had a single veneer done to her front tooth before she heads off to college this fall. Dr. Weierbach and his staff went above and beyond in the way of service. Dr. Weierbach is committed to the fine details and the overall experience/product. My daughter's veneer is absolute perfection due to his team's experience & professionalism. You get what you pay for and we are extremely pleased. My daughter's mouth posed issues and subsequently several impromptu visits for repair of her temporary bonding and no matter when it happened- a staff was there to ensure she was taken care of (even on the weekend). In a world of subpar service... this team is the example by which all should be measured. Five Star service.

I first went to see Dr. Weierbach for a dental implant I had done by another dentist. I was not pleased with the way it looked. Dr. Weierbach fixed it for me and now it looks great. I can smile without feeling self conscious. I also, had some teeth crowned and a root canal. It was the easiest root canal I ever had done ( I have had several). Dr. weierbach is very particular and wants the job done right. The staff is very pleasant and very friendly. If there are any doubts about trying Dr. Weierbach, let me assure you, he is the very best!
